Innovating for a sustainable future

MARPOWER PROJECT

Pioneering the decarbonization of maritime transport with advanced gas-turbine technology and sustainable fuels

The MARPOWER Project is dedicated to decarbonizing maritime transport by developing a gas-turbine energy conversion system that replaces fossil fuels with net-zero alternatives. By promoting the use of sustainable fuels such as green methane, hydrogen, and ammonia, the project ensures the technology remains competitive for integration into existing vessels. Ultimately, MARPOWER aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and marine pollution, contributing to the protection of oceans and coastal ecosystems.

Case studies assessing MARPOWER integration on real ships

As the maritime sector works to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the MARPOWER project is developing a next-generation clean energy system for ships. This new technology is designed to run on several climate-neutral fuels and deliver high efficiency, helping vessels move away from fossil fuels without compromising performance. To understand how the system could work in practice, the project is carrying out two digital case studies based on real ship types: a container vessel and a cruise ship.

The Team

The MARPOWER project brings together eleven European entities from six countries, each contributing specialized expertise to the initiative. This diverse consortium includes academic institutions, research centres, industrial SMEs, large enterprises, and service providers, all focused on advancing knowledge in turbomachinery, new fuels, combustion, energy conversion systems, gas turbines, bearing systems, heat recovery, digital twins, and shipbuilding.
