MARPOWER showcased at INTRE2 workshop, fostering technical exchange on innovative energy solutions

The MARPOWER project was presented at the second edition of the International Workshop on Innovative Tools for Research in Energy Efficiency (INTRE2), held on 8 and 9 June in Vigo, Spain. The workshop brought together researchers and academics to exchange knowledge and discuss innovative approaches to energy efficiency, advanced simulation tools, renewable energy integration and sustainability.

Sergio Chapela, Associate Professor at Universidade de Vigo presented a MARPOWER poster in the workshop’s European Corner, introducing attendees to the project’s work on advanced energy conversion systems for maritime transport. The poster highlighted MARPOWER’s integrated approach, combining fuel flexibility, waste heat recovery and digital modelling technologies to support more sustainable shipping.

According to Chapela: “The poster generated significant interest among researchers and professionals attending the workshop. Participants were particularly interested in the scale of the project and the way MARPOWER integrates multiple innovative technologies within a single energy conversion system for maritime applications”.

Beyond increasing the visibility of the project, the event also enabled discussions with researchers working on innovative energy technologies and energy efficiency solutions.

Commenting on the discussions held during the event, Chapela added: “The workshop provided a valuable space for technical knowledge exchange. Discussions with researchers working on 100% hydrogen combustion technologies allowed us to compare technical challenges, operational scenarios and engineering phenomena relevant across different energy transition applications”.

These exchanges contributed to a broader discussion on the development of advanced energy technologies and the role of innovative engineering solutions in supporting the transition towards more sustainable energy systems.

About INTRE2

The International Workshop on Innovative Tools for Research in Energy Efficiency (INTRE2) is a forum dedicated to promoting collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of energy engineering. The workshop is organised by the ENEDI research group (University of the Basque Country), the SWIFT Solar and Wind Feasibility Technologies research group (University of Burgos), and the GTE – Grupo de Tecnoloxía Enerxética (University of Vigo), within the framework of the inter-university Doctoral Programme in Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Engineering and Architecture. The event focuses on novel experimental techniques, advanced simulation tools, sustainable management solutions and other research areas related to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Through participation in events such as INTRE2, MARPOWER continues to engage with the wider research community, sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration around innovative solutions for sustainable maritime transport.

The MARPOWER project brings together a multidisciplinary European consortium coordinated by LUT University and comprising Aurelia Technologies, Alfa Laval, Politecnico di Milano, RINA Consulting, RINA Services, the University of Vigo, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Zabala Innovation. Through this collaborative effort, the project is advancing innovative fuel-flexible and high-efficiency energy conversion technologies to support the decarbonisation of maritime transport.
