MARPOWER to participate in ZHENIT final event on sustainable maritime innovation

The event will bring together leading EU-funded projects to exchange results and explore synergies in the development of innovative clean energy solutions for shipping
MARPOWER to participate in ZHENIT final event on sustainable maritime innovation

The MARPOWER project has been invited to participate in the final event of the ZHENIT project, taking place on 17 April 2026 in Augusta, Italy, and accessible online, bringing together key European initiatives advancing sustainable maritime technologies.

ZHENIT is a European research project focused on accelerating the transition towards zero-emission waterborne transport through innovative energy solutions and alternative fuel technologies. Its final event will showcase the project’s main achievements while creating a space for dialogue and knowledge exchange across related Horizon Europe projects.

Building on this collaborative approach, the event will gather several initiatives addressing complementary challenges in maritime decarbonisation, fostering connections between research, industry and policy stakeholders.

MARPOWER contribution

MARPOWER will contribute to the session dedicated to collaborative projects by presenting its overall concept and its approach to improving onboard energy efficiency through an advanced, fuel-flexible energy conversion system. The project aims to enable the effective use of net-zero fuels while optimising energy generation and integration within ship systems, thereby supporting both environmental performance and operational flexibility. The presentation will also address the progress achieved so far and the challenges ahead in the development of the MARPOWER energy conversion system.

The presentation will be delivered by Fiorella Valenti, Innovation for Power Generation and Hydrogen Junior Project Manager at RINA Consulting and a member of the MARPOWER team. Within the project, RINA Consulting leads the Assessment activities, which focus on evaluating the MARPOWER system from regulatory, integration and performance perspectives, including safety, lifecycle considerations and greenhouse gas emissions.

The session will also include contributions from other European projects such as RESHIP, LH2CRAFT, FLEETfor55, SAFeCRAFT and ENGIMMONIA, further highlighting the joint effort across the EU to advance innovative solutions for sustainable maritime transport.

Strengthening collaboration across EU projects

Participation in the ZHENIT final event reflects MARPOWER’s commitment to collaboration within the European research ecosystem. By engaging with complementary initiatives, the project contributes to a coordinated effort to accelerate the transition towards cleaner, more efficient and resilient maritime energy systems.

As maritime transport faces increasing pressure to reduce emissions and comply with evolving EU and international frameworks, such as those promoted by the European Union and the International Maritime Organization, collaboration across projects becomes essential to align technological innovation with policy and market needs.
